Air Force Research Laboratory Successfully Tests AI

The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) has announced the successful test flight of an uncrewed jet controlled by artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms. The three-hour sortie, which took place on July 25, marks a significant step forward in the development of collaborative combat aircraft (CCA) for the Air Force. The CCA program aims to create unmanned combat air vehicles that can effectively support and work alongside human pilots as reliable wingmen.

The flight, conducted over the Eglin Test and Training Complex in Florida, demonstrated the ability of the AI/ML (artificial intelligence/machine learning) agents to execute modern air-to-air and air-to-surface skills. This milestone paves the way for the integration of AI-controlled systems into the CCA program.

The AI algorithms used in the test were developed by AFRL’s Autonomous Air Combat Operations team. The project has been in progress for the past two years, originating from the SkyBorg Vanguard program, which focuses on developing an AI system for unmanned aircraft.

Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. C.Q. Brown Jr. emphasized the importance of the CCA program, stating that it will break the mold and require innovative approaches to flying, training, software development, and equipment sustainment. The integration of AI is seen as crucial for future warfighting capabilities, allowing for faster decision-making and a better understanding of the operational environment.

AFRL’s successful test flight is a significant achievement in advancing the capabilities of unmanned combat air vehicles. While details of the test remain restricted due to operational security considerations, the demonstration represents a key milestone in the Air Force’s pursuit of AI-controlled collaborative combat aircraft.
